Introducing the #10Cs to Financial Freedom

WizNews Edition #1, Friday 8/13/21

Five years ago, I decided my most important #DadGoals was to help my three daughters become financially free by age 21.  Epicures at risk of kuidaore*, the girls love their toro, ikura and ankimo.  Rather than just feed them sushi, we wanted them to learn to fish.
Hey, it's San and it's been a while. Welcome to the inaugural Wizards Newsletter.

We will be sharing insights from research related to our Wall Street Journal & USA Today best-selling book, Ten Commandments of Investing (the #10Cs).  In Edition #1, we cover:
  • Learning to fish and the book's 10+ year story
  • Our mission to help millions adopt the #10Cs to Financial Freedom
  • Investment Wizard interviews and learning events

When the girls were as young as 8, we introduced them to two books.

Tim Ferriss' 4-Hour Workweek taught that our most precious asset is time. Robert Kiyosaki's Rich Dad, Poor Dad taught what my Chinese parents, a Wharton degree and 3 MBA tuitions never did - to be money smart, not just book smart.

We also wanted the girls to learn investing -  whether they would be passive or career investors, for them to learn the best practices of the most successful investors, the Investment Wizards.

Amazon lists 30,000+ investment books - why another?   We tried, but could not find one that captivates like 4-Hour Workweek or Rich Dad, Poor Dad.  The top books were overly asset-specific, outdated, too technical, or boring.

So we said let's write our own.

We set an ambitious goal: we wanted our book to be the third must-read book after Ferriss and Kiyosaki - one that is educational, accessible, fun to read - and impactful.

Luckily, my brother Ed (a former CEO of an investment bank) and I had spent the past 10+ years investing with and researching Investment Wizards.  We had written a 100-page manuscript called the Investors Bible (akin to Cliff Notes) of their best practices.   We signed a reputable publisher for Investors Bible.   Then came COVID-19.  Ed's son Tim (a senior in college) and my daughter Oia (a high school senior) at the time, read the manuscript.

It'd never sell, they said.

While Investors Bible had tremendous insights from Investment Wizards, it was, like the other books, too technical and boring.

They were right.

So Tim, Oia, and I completely re-wrote the book, drawing from the Investors Bible's decade-long research and rich content.   Many interviews, Zoom calls and four drafts later, we published the Ten Commandments of Investing.

The Bible's Ten Commandments is a universal guide to life for billions. The Ten Commandments of Investing, as practiced by the greatest Investment Wizards, is meant to be a universal guide to investing for millions - applicable to all asset classes, in any geography, in all economic cycles.

We added many stories and case studies.   We kept it content-rich for experienced investors while infusing Tim and Oia's voices to make it easy to understand for novices and a joy to read for all.

Our readers agree.
The book made #1 in two Amazon categories last November.  In February, #10Cs hit the best-sellers lists on Wall Street Journal and USA Today, and in June, we released the paperback version with plans for audio and Chinese, Spanish, and Korean editions.

According to the World Bank, the majority of adults (adults - not just kids!) lack basic financial and investment knowledge.  Even in the rich world, two-thirds of Americans live paycheck to paycheck.   We believe the #10Cs provide a great roadmap: financial literacy instills financial confidence and sets the path to financial freedom.

Our mission is to help millions to invest smarter using the #10Cs, through the book and its non-profit companion site Wizards Institute.   All content is free and all book profits are donated to three charities that share our cause.

How can you help?

Oia, now 18, has taken meaningful steps to follow the #10Cs.  She invests in stocks and generates monthly passive income online, her academic tutoring business is thriving and she is taking a gap year before UChicago to invest in real estate.

She wants to pay her own way through college and be financially free by age 21 so she can chase her passions.

Yup, she's fishing and can indulge in sushi without risk of kuidaore ;o)

Thank you and may we all #10Cs to Financial Freedom!
